The focus of this chapter is on the physiology of “normal” lungs for patients undergoing anesthetic procedures. In addition, important concepts for the care of patients with obesity, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are described.
