Etiologies include excessive doses of insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents, particularly in the setting of decreased nutritional intake. Other causes of hypoglycemia include sepsis, liver failure, a spectrum of pancreatic diseases, some malignancies, hypopituitarism, adrenal insufficiency, and renal failure in patients who receive insulin (reduced insulin clearance).
