Oocytes are retrieved with a transvaginal needle under ultrasound guidance. Immobility during the procedure minimizes risks and improves the quality of retrieval. Monitored anesthesia care with moderate-to-deep sedation is the most common anesthetic choice. Midazolam, fentanyl, remifentanil, and meperidine do not appear to affect fertility.
