Hypoglycemia

First Things First (assess & treat for the following)

• Assess the ABCs.
• Check level of consciousness.
• If patient awake and able, give 15 grams of PO carbohydrate (glucose tabs, juice, etc.).
• If patient has decreased mental status or NPO, give 1 amp of D50W IV. If no IV access is possible, administer 1 mg of glucagon IM.
• Recheck blood glucose in 15 minutes to assess further need for treatment.
