Complicated Pleural Space Infections

First Things First (assess & treat for the following)

Does pt have pleural effusion & clinical picture consistent w/ pneumonia (eg, parapneumonic effusion)? Start empiric antibiotics after blood cultures are done.
Diagnostic thoracentesis for moderate to large effusions using ultrasound or CT guidance unless contraindicated (eg, severe coagulopathy)
Early thoracic surgery & interventional radiology consultation for complicated pleural space mgt
