Infectious Diseases and Infection Control in Anesthesia - Occupational Exposure to Infectious Disease

Prevention of Exposure

Prevention of Exposure

  1. Use standard or universal precautions as above.
  2. Observe needle safety. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 385,000 needlestick and other sharps-related injuries occur in health care workers each year. Many safety needle and needleless systems have been designed and should be used preferentially over standard needles. Needles should never be recapped, and needles should be discarded in a labeled sharps container immediately after use.
