The Postanesthesia Care Unit - Enhanced Recovery After Surgery

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society promotes a series of evidenced-based interventions and treatments encompassing the entire perioperative period. When these recommendations are applied, they lead to better clinical outcomes including reduced mortality and shorter hospital lengths of stay. The foundational efforts were performed in patients who had elective colonic surgery, but additional guidelines have been presented for pancreaticoduodenectomies, rectal and pelvic surgeries, and radical cystectomies. In the PACU, specific attention can be given toward minimizing PONV, applying multimodal analgesia strategies, reducing opioid administration while maintaining adequate pain control, and judicious application of balanced crystalloids for resuscitation.
