Combined Spinal–Epidural Anesthesia

Spinal anesthesia offers the benefits of rapid onset. Placement of an epidural catheter at the same time offers the advantage of prolonged anesthesia and analgesia for longer procedures or postoperative pain management. This technique often is used in the labor and delivery setting (see Chapter 32).
