Warming. Most cardiac surgical patients will be hypothermic upon arrival to the ICU, and their initial course is notable for warming and vasodilation. Pressor and volume requirements should be anticipated. Adequate sedation, by either periodic bolus or continuous infusion, will prevent early waking and shivering during this period.
