Transfusion Therapy - Pharmacologic Therapy
Erythropoietin
Erythropoietin increases RBC mass by stimulating proliferation and development of the erythroid precursor cells. It can be used before elective surgery to increase RBC production. Its role in the perioperative period is unclear. Concern remains that its use will increase the incidence of venous and arterial thrombotic events.
