Erythropoietin (EPO)

Erythropoietin (EPO) increases RBC mass by stimulating the proliferation and development of erythroid precursor cells. Recombinant EPO can be administered before elective surgery to increase RBC production. However, its role in the perioperative period is unclear, and its use may be associated with an increased incidence of hypertension and adverse thrombotic events.
