Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

First Things First (assess & treat for the following)

  • Consider immediate parenteral anticoagulation if sign of massive DVT (upper leg, inguinal involvement).
    • Assess for contraindications to anticoagulation at the same time!
  • If venous thromboembolism (VTE) is present, then treatment is aimed as soon as possible at limiting propagation of thrombus and likelihood of pulmonary embolism.
  • If clinical likelihood of DVT is low (rather than moderate/high), then order confirmatory blood test.
