Inhaled Solvents

First Things First (assess & treat for the following)

  • Inhaled solvents may include:
    • Aliphatic hydrocarbons (petroleum distillates)
    • Halogenated hydrocarbons (carbon tetrachloride)
    • Aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene)
    • Terpenes (pine oil)
  • ABCs of resuscitation
  • Aspiration
  • Acidosis
  • Sudden sniffing death secondary to dysrhythmias
  • Laryngeal spasm or bronchospasm
  • Seizures
  • Do not induce emesis.
