Preeclampsia is a common diagnosis occurring in approximately 5% of pregnancies, particularly in nulliparous, diabetic, hypertensive patients or those with chronic disease. Although the etiology is incompletely understood, possible mechanisms of disease include a combination of factors including exaggerated maternal immune and inflammatory responses as well as chronic uteroplacental ischemia leading to upregulation of angiogenic factors.
