Hypoglycemia
First Things First (assess & treat for the following)
- Assess the ABCs.
- Check level of consciousness.
- If patient awake and able, give 15 grams of PO carbohydrate (glucose tabs, juice, etc.).
- If patient has decreased mental status or NPO, give 1 amp of D50W IV. If no IV access is possible, administer 1 mg of glucagon IM.
- Recheck blood glucose in 15 minutes to assess further need for treatment.
