- Hyperglycemia occurs in critically ill patients regardless of history of diabetes mellitus.
- Complications of hyperglycemia
- Volume depletion
- Impaired erythropoiesis
- Endothelial dysfunction
- Increased secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators
- Potential consequences of untreated hyperglycemia
- Sepsis
- Decreased kidney function
- Critical illness polyneuropathy
- Respiratory failure
- Increased mortality
