Common Street Drugs: Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)

First Things First (assess & treat for the following)

  • LSD is an indole derivative that acts as both serotonin agonist & antagonist, w/ strong hallucinogenic properties.
  • Abused for changes in thought, perception, consciousness
  • ED visits are usually the result of panic reactions, massive ingestions or accidental ingestions.
  • Severe anxiety & agitation may occur.
    • Treat w/ reassurance, minimal stimuli.
    • May respond to benzodiazepines
  • Massive ingestions may result in coma, respiratory arrest, HTN, coagulopathy.
    • Maintain airway patency; support w/ oxygenation/ventilation if necessary.
    • Treat hypertensive emergencies w/ sodium nitroprusside.
